British Library historical aerials by Landmark

During WWII, the Ordnance Survey was heavily hit and instead of producing standard maps in the immediate period following the war, they relied on historical aerial photos from the Royal Air Force.

These 'Post War gap fillers' provide critical missing information for the period between 1944 and 1951. The photographs have been digitised for the first time from the British Library, with additional photographs provided from Landmark's own archive.

    What is Oblique Imagery?

Promap now offers high resolution, 10cm oblique imagery, covering all of Great Britain’s major urban areas, with populations over 50,000 provided by BLOM Aerofilms.

Oblique imagery goes one step further than traditional vertical imagery, with images taken from all four angels of the compass, North, South, East and West. The complete set of images provide an overall image of all features within the natural and built environment. The versatility of the imagery enables a powerful and intelligent desktop analysis, saving the costs of site visits and provides the wow factor in presentations and reports.

The oblique imagery displayer allows the different perspectives to be viewed. By using the imagery users are able to assess the size, shape, design, construction and surrounding environment of any building or feature whilst the different vantage points allow more detailed infrastructure information to be assembled including shop frontages, bus stops and telephone boxes.
