Frequently Asked Questions

Promap and screen resolutions

What is a screen resolution?

Your computer screen is displayed using a grid of dots called "pixels". The term screen resolution refers to the number of pixels that are shown on your screen at a time. The fewer pixels that are shown, the larger an image will appear; likewise if you have more pixels, the images displayed on your screen are reduced in size. This allows you to display more on your screen at a time.

A screen resolution is given in the format of width in pixels x height in pixels. An example would be 800 x 600, which means that the screen is showing 800 pixels across and 600 pixels down. This is commonly known as "800 by 600", and is considered a low screen resolution.

Why is a bigger resolution better for Promap?

Increasing the resolution of your screen will help you to see more mapping on screen at a time, without paying any more! Because of the way the Promap site is designed, as your screen resolution grows the main map area will expand.

This means that the higher your screen resolution, the more mapping you will be able to see on your screen. This enables you to see a larger area of the map you have purchased at no extra cost.

NOTE:
Having a higher resolution - and therefore more map displayed on screen - will NOT change the scale that your map is printed to.

How do I change my screen resolution?

  1. If you are using Vista, right-click on your desktop, choose "Personalize" from the menu, and the choose "Display Properties". Otherwise, right-click on your desktop to open the "Display Properties" dialog.
  2. Click the "Settings" tab.
  3. Move the slider in the lower half of the panel to the right to increase your resolution, or to the left to decrease it.
We recommend at least 1024 x 768 resolution, and the optimum is a resolution of 1280 x 1024 if your computer supports it.
  4. Click the "OK" button.
  5. Windows will prompt you to confirm that you wish to keep the new settings; click "Yes".
  6. Log into Promap as normal and you will now see the benefits of your change.
Once you click the "OK" button, Windows will apply your changes and will prompt you to either keep the new display settings or to revert to your old ones. You must press "Yes" to have your settings applied; if you do not press anything for 15 seconds, Windows will automatically revert to your previous settings. This is a safety feature of Windows that will prevent you from picking a display resolution that either your monitor or computer does not support.
