UKMap®

Unveiling a new London

Promap is pleased to provide instant access to an alternative source of mapping for London provided by The GeoInformation Group.

What is UKMap®?

UKMap® is a brand new, highly detailed and feature rich mapping layer based on 1:1,000 scale topographic mapping from The GeoInformation Group. UKMap® accurately locates buildings, garages, property boundaries, roads, trees and a multitude of other features. It comprises of address information, building heights, aerial photography and a retail database including above ground floor usage.

How has UKMap® been created?

UKMap®’s topographic features have been digitised at 1:250 scale using high resolution aerial photography.

The aerial photos were orthorectified using a GPS and a detailed terrain model from Cities Revealed® LiDAR database. This gave an accurate basis from which the mapping could be digitised.

All features within the photo were then digitised, such as fences, buildings, road markings, trees, bridges etc. using the most up to date digitising tools to ensure parallel lines, right angled corners and splines for curves were created accurately. This all makes for a neater, accurate and cartographically sound map base.

The maps were then sent out to a team of dedicated field workers who walked every street, park and industrial estate; in fact everywhere with public access, in order to collect the content of the mapping. This content included the collation of house numbers, street names, shop names, locality information, office names etc. The data was then added to the digitised map layer of UKMap®.

Over 30 people were involved in collecting fieldwork data in London during the 15 months it took to complete a street by street survey and completed some 60,000 pieces of paper.

NEW - UKMap 3D Data Bundle

What is UKMap 3D Data Bundle?

We have taken the recent UKMap topographic detail layer and combined it with additional datasets to create the UKMap 3D Data Bundle in DWG format for use in CAD applications.

In addition to the 1:1000 UKMap Detail mapping layer, the UKMap 3D Data Bundle also combines LiDAR derived height data to extrude buildings to their appropriate heights creating a basic building block 3D model. A DTM resolved at 5m postings displayed as a TIN (Triangulated Irregular Network) and Contours at 0.5m intervals have also been included in order to provide further terrain detail.

The addition of a 10cm, full colour aerial photography is also included within the dataset to provide realism to the site or project.

UKMap 3D Data Bundle Key features in CAD

  • Each building sits at its relevant height in model space
  • Every building has been extruded to the highest value for the building footprint derived from the aerial and LiDAR survey
  • Building height values are displayed on each building to provide a quick and easy reference
  • The TIN or Triangulated Irregular Network surface provided moves away from the traditional point cloud datasets to provide a good level of context whilst keeping the file sizes within useable limits
  • UKMap 3D Data Bundle provides 77 individual layers derived from the classification codes in the source data
  • A number of pre-set filters are applied to the layers in the UKMap 3D Data Bundle to sort them into manageable groupings containing similar features
  • Filters can be turned on/off, frozen/thawed, locked/unlocked, isolated and made visible/invisible as required
