To obtain an Easting and Northing for a point on the map

The Grid Reference tool is located on the left-hand side of the Notification Bar at the base of the map.  It is permanently active to show you the Easting and Northing co-ordinates for the position of your cursor on the UKMap Detail layer, and the Easting and Northing co-ordinates, OS Tile Number and National Grid Reference for the position of your cursor on the VML Raster and OS Detail layer.

1.  Click the  button in the Notification Bar .

The mouse cursor will change to an arrow and a question mark.

2.  Click the site or building you would like the grid reference for.

The following pop-up will appear giving you the Easting and Northing for the building or site you selected.

3.  Click Yes if you want to create a text box showing the Easting and Northing.

The top left-hand corner of the box is placed at the point selected. If you move the box the reference is no longer accurate.

Tip

You can use this feature to find a site when you have an Easting and Northing. Just move the question mark around the map and click the site when you find the co-ordinates you're looking for.

The VML Raster and OS Detail layers also provide the OS Tile number and the National Grid Reference in the Notification Bar at the base of the map.  If you would like this information in the text box containing the Easting and Northing, double-click the text box. Type the information you want to add in to the top left hand corner of the Text Properties dialog box and click OK. The information you have added will be displayed on screen.
