Focus on the Data – Scheduled Monuments

Promap Functionality

Through the viewable data layers monthly subscription this dataset can be overlaid on to the OS Openmap, Aerial. OS Vectormap Local and OS Mastermap topography layers, included in prints and the data exported to a CSV file.

What does it provide?

This dataset identifies Scheduled Monuments in England, Scotland and Wales. Scheduling is the only legal protection specifically for archaeological sites of national importance, and protects against disturbance (deliberate or otherwise) or unlicensed metal detecting and the removal of objects from on-site.

A Schedule has been kept since 1882 of monuments whose preservation is given priority over other land uses, and this process is continued and ongoing. Scheduled Monuments can be subject to a Revision, where new archaeological/historical evidence regarding the monument has required an alteration to the map depiction. Monuments can also be removed from the Schedule in a process called DE Scheduling. Scheduled Monuments cannot include in use ecclesiastical buildings or monuments occupied as a dwelling (other than by a Caretaker) and unlike Listed Buildings they are not assigned grade.

The current legislation, the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, supports a formal system of Scheduled Monument Consent for any work to a designated monument. In all cases, the digital outlines of the Scheduled sites in this dataset are an interpretation of scans from paper maps derived from the original legal documents and should be seen as indicative only. The boundaries indicated, whether digitally or in hardcopy, have no legal status and none should be inferred.
